The murmur of the crowd steadily gives way to silence. All eyes turn to the stage… The opening chords ring out from a guitar. The Battle has begun.

The Battle of the Bands has been a Chicagoland tradition since time immemorial (or at least since Kellogg and Booth both agreed to the concept some years ago, far beyond the recollection of the current co-chairs!). It pits two Chicago Booth bands against two of Kellogg’s in a contest of musicianship, creativity, and stage presence. Half concert, half party, 100% fun, the event will once again take place at the historic Vic Theater. Fellow Boothies… we are ready to crank it up to 11!

On a chilly evening eight months ago, the musicians of Booth gathered for pizza, frosty beverages, and a jam session. From those initial tentative chords and simple drum beats, four bands slowly took form from 1Ys and 2Ys alike, drawn together by the greatest force humankind has ever known: the power of music. They rehearsed, trying new songs and scrapping old ones, steadily developing into a refined, rehearsed collective. Sometimes smooth, sometimes chaotic, the four bands of Booth each developed their unique sound and style.

Then came the Audition. The spectacular event at Joe’s on Weed in March has been described by some as “the best Booth event I’ve ever been to.” Others could not even remember, so overwhelmed were they by the excitement, energy and overall awesomeness of the evening. From the maelstrom emerged two victors – Maroon 7 and Beluga Fails. And on Friday May 18th they will once again bravely take the stage, going all-out to defeat the two would-be competitors from Kellogg – The Captains of Industry and Rocket Pockets.

For the past two years I have played MC to multiple events at which our bands have performed and I can honestly say that the performance that is coming will be the greatest show that we, as AudioBooth, have ever put on for our fellow Boothies. Our bands have been rigorously practicing for weeks, often times working far into the wee hours of the morning to find just the right set lists, to get their timing perfect, and to craft flawless performances for everyone who is planning to attend. A singular purpose has developed: to defeat Kellogg. It has been a long and rocky ride to get to where we are today, a few short days away from the marquee musical event on the Booth calendar. The instruments are tuned and the musicians are ready. I cannot guarantee that we will win, but I can guarantee that it will be one of the most memorable nights of our time at Booth. I will be there, will you? Prepare for Battle…
