Life Imitates Art
Homer Simpson and The Economist

Issue date: 5/27/04 Section: Humor
Sitting on the plane and reading the most recent issue of The Economist, I was surprised to come across a "Simpsons" quote. Apparently, in the April 25th episode, Homer was gunning for Colin Powell's position while traveling first class and said, "Look at me, I'm reading The Economist. Did you know Indonesia is at a crossroads?" Four days later, in typical dry style, The Economist mentioned the quote.
I chuckled, impressed to see a "Simpsons" quote get this far. I laughed out loud, however, when I saw the title of an article later in the same issue: "Investing in Indonesia: at a Crossroads." I think my co-passengers were perplexed to see someone belly laugh at The Economist.
He may not be Secretary of State, but hats off to Homer Simpson for getting into the international magazine of record twice in one issue. And hats off to the editors of The Economist for putting him there.
