Scott Meadow, Clinical Professor of Entrepreneurship, is popular among students in the Entrepreneurship Program not only as a teacher of Entrepreneurial Finance, but also as a career adviser. (He holds regular hours on Fridays to advise those among us interested in potential careers in venture capital/private equity and entrepreneurship).
On March 6th at McCormick Place, Mike McAndrews, Director of Product Management for Cisco Systems's Wireless Networking Business Unit, gave a presentation on wireless networking technologies at the most recent Mobile Wednesday event. Mobile Wednesdays are free monthly events hosted by First Tuesday Chicago.
"Thank you for seeing me today and allowing me to talk to you about recruiting at the GSB," I said to the College Relations Manager, who responded by saying, "I'm very familiar with your program. We used to recruit at the GSB, you know. But we were just not able to get the hiring results that we've gotten from other MBA schools, so we dropped Chicago from the core schools list.
Recently, Apple Computer visited the University of Chicago for a "Tech Talk" co-sponsored by the GSB High-Tech Group and the Computer Science Department. Jerry Darling, Systems Developer, and Jack McLaughlin, Account Executive, addressed a crowd of about 100 people in Ida Noyes Hall regarding Apple's strategies on the new Mac OS X, its Darwin project, Apple hardware, and its wireless focus.
The inaugural meeting the eBusiness Roundtable occurred at the Gleacher Center on March 7. The topic of the event was "Digital Transformation" and the speaker was Rajan Anandan, Principal at McKinsey and Company. Mr. Anandan and McKinsey are working with the Wharton School to research how large companies are using digital technologies in their core businesses.
On Friday and Saturday, April 5 and 6, the GSB's Gays and Lesbians in Business co-hosted "Reaching Out", the 4th Annual Lesbian and Gay MBA Conference at the Renaissance hotel in downtown Chicago. With more than 400 registered participants from all across the country, the conference brought together MBA students, alumni, and corporate sponsors to discuss issues of interest to the GLBT community, but also to provide networking opportunities for students and alumni.
Chicago Business had the chance to speak with Phillips Hinch, Class of 2002 and one of the co-organizers of this year's conference. Q: What do you see as the main purpose of this conference? A: Our most important goal is to provide current MBA students with networking opportunities – we bring together lesbian and gay students from business schools all around the country, alumni, and companies that are actively reaching out to the GLBT community.
Under the theme "Leading Change" one of the Friday afternoon panels discussed "University Change", focusing on how to effect change in a collegiate environment that might not always be open to addressing the needs of the gay and lesbian community. Moderated by Ryan Hatton, an undergraduate from Purdue, the panel aimed to provide attendees with examples of how other campuses had successfully impacted their campuses and initiated significant change with respect to gay and lesbian issues.
A new student committee, the Dean of Students International Student Advisory Committee, was established in March. Our primary goals are: (1) support international students to enhance their experience at Chicago GSB, (2) promote understanding of international issues at the GSB and bring all regions together by working through established regional student groups, and (3) contribute to the GSB's recognition abroad (in our home countries!).
After nearly four years at the helm of MBA Career Services, Glenn Sykes will be stepping down at the end of the spring quarter. "It is with great regret that I announce that Glenn Sykes has decided to leave his position as Associate Dean of MBA Career Services," said Deputy Dean Ann McGill in an e-mail to the GSB community.
Panic room is hot in the theatre, the economy is crawling its way back and the recruiting is closing its curtain. Yet the first year GSB Chinese community is still in the trenches… As an online GSB Chinese forum was unfolding a discussion on how to effectively tackle the recruiting dilemma, I was always a silent observer.
