Career Services Updates

By Julie Morton, Associate Dean

And we're off! The new school year has started with a bang, and I write now with three "good news" updates and a couple of reminders: 1.The recruiting calendar is full! On-campus outlook: About this time of year, the question I get asked most frequently from students is "how many companies are coming on campus to recruit?" To date, 180 companies have scheduled interviews versus 174 this time last year.

Marketing the GSB

On GSB Cool

By Chris Iannuccilli, Executive Director of Marketing

Shortly after my arrival at the GSB last fall, we launched the "Building Branding Project." Although the Hyde Park Center had opened to rave reviews the year before, it lacked branding. Not only weren't we identifying the building as Chicago GSB, on a deeper level, there weren't many clues to what goes on here and our connection with a management education that goes back more than a century.

IBEP Experience

Where in the world do Chicago GSB students want to go?

By Anneli Spielman, International Programs

Most Chicago GSB students want the option to go far and wide with their degree. The best way to do that is to utilize the Office of International Programs while you're here. It's easy to find out more about IBEP or the IMBA degree. Just show up at one or all of these events: Open Office Hours - Stop by our information table in the Winter Garden (by south doors) with your IBEP/IMBA questions.

Sharing Some Platforms with Mothers at the GSB

By Nidhi Thakur

The Wall Street Journal, on September 20, carried an article on how B-schools are learning to accommodate the growing number of women with children who are applying to their programs. While this phenomenon of back-to-school moms is not new, schools in recent years have started to notice an increase in the number of women applicants who have children.

Looking Back and Looking Ahead

An Interview with IDFC CEO and GSB Alum, Luis Miranda

By Barbara L. Passy, '07

Luis Miranda, CEO of IDFC Private Equity in Mumbai, took some time out of his busy schedule to reflect on the meaning of his time at the GSB. He examines the tradeoffs of career and personal life and reflects on the value of friendship. What does the GSB mean to you in retrospect? I enjoyed my 2 years at the GSB - had some great professors (who have remained friends over the years), met some of my closest friends and was fortunate to be involved in starting LEAD.

What's New at the GSB?

Summer in HPC

By Stacey Kole, Deputy Dean

Quiet envelops the Hyde Park Center during the summer months. As full-time students head out to showcase newly honed learning, the MBA program staff review the prior year and plan for the coming academic year. Admissions finalizes its strategies for marketing and recruitment and then begins traveling in August; the Dean of Students team (Academic Advising and Student Group Advising) and the Diversity Affairs and International Programs teams assess programming and coordination issues with an eye to improve the student experience; and, Career Services focus on their constituencies--reaching out to recruiters and reviewing programming to fully support students in their career aspirations.

EnCORE

EnCORE Hits it Out of the park, again and again!

By Isabelle Jette, '07

For second years, the past twelve months have simply flown by, and before we could even begin to become acclimatized to Chicago and our surroundings again (for those of us who completed our internships away from the Windy City), here we are, back for an encore performance.

BSCIT Report

How Well is Your Cohort Doing After the Scavenger Hunt?

By Isabelle Jette, '07

On Saturday, shortly before 2pm, both 1st and 2nd years looked at the skies with visibly dubious looks. They feared that the rain would not relent and in fact expected serious thunder storms to take over later in the afternoon, which would have potentially rained out the anticipated citywide BSCIT Scavenger Hunt.

Admissions

By Rose Martinelli, Associate Dean

It is wonderful to see the halls full again with students. As the year gets underway, I would like to update you on what has been happening in MBA Admissions. First, it is our pleasure to welcome the Class of 2008 to campus. This class is extraordinary in every way (just like the Class of 2007).

Cohorts and Initiatives

By Ann Harvilla, Associate Dean

Cohorts play a very important role at Chicago GSB, although they function very differently than they do at other business schools. At our peer schools, cohorts are mechanisms for organizing the entire first-year academic experience, and often are the structures through which study groups are assigned and organized.

Leading LEAD

By Stacey Kole, Deputy Dean

As we search for a new head of the Leadership Effectiveness and Development Program, I am honored to partner with our LEAD coaches and 2006 Facilitators to deliver Chicago GSB's acclaimed LEAD curriculum. We have made some changes this year that I wish to highlight: LEAD as foundational component of a Chicago MBA: Building on the feedback we received from the Class of 2007 at summer intern roundtables and the consistent message that we heard from recruiters and employers on the critical importance of communication and interpersonal skills for career success, we strengthened our messages delivered during CORE about the value of developing the leadership skills taught and practiced in LEAD.

Dubious Advice to First-Year Full-Time Students

Oh No! It's Yet Another 10 Random Thoughts. When will they end?

By Satyajeet Salgar, '07

First-years, Welcome to the GSB! You'll have a great time here, though many of you will try really hard not to. As I think back to the time I woke up and somehow made it to HPC a few minutes before the buses left for LOE, I couldn't help but reflect on the advice I could have used that would have allowed me to enjoy life a little bit more at the GSB.

The BIG IDEA for the GSB

Ideas on How the Best Business School in the World Can Get Better

By Rags Vadali, '07

Increasing Our Social Capital at the GSB Amit Grover, '07 One of the fundamental dichotomies of GSB is the flexibility of the curriculum, combined with the initial bonding experience - LEAD However, in speaking with some fellow students, I have come to the conclusion that there is a dark side to all this, which we could work on.

Simple Rules to Follow So You Aren't "That Guy"

By Janelle Bundas, '07 and Justin Fregia, '07

Three hour lectures can be brutal enough; no one needs to be distracted by an annoying classmate. Here are 22 simple rules to follow so you aren't "that guy": 1. For God's sake, turn off your cell phone and mute the volume on your laptop. Even if you've never had cellular service in the HPC basement, you miraculously will as soon as your Mom calls in the middle of class.
